AOL launches political advertising service

(CNN) – Political campaigns and advocacy groups can now easily advertise on AOL, and other online platforms, thanks to a new political advertising hub the company launched Thursday.

The new site acts as a one-stop shop for campaigns to built and place "display ads," which are commonly thought of as "banner ads."

The hub allows advertisers to directly target their ads to specific AOL owned properties, such as PoliticsDaily.com or MapQuest.com.

Advertisements can be placed on non-AOL sites as well through the AOL owned Advertising.com, which according to AOL reaches 158 million unique visitors over 18 years old every month. Campaigns are also able to target specific relevant audiences and congressional districts.

Jeff Levick, AOL's president of global advertising and strategy, told CNN the new hub will be a way to place ads that are "highly targeted" and "highly efficient," while allowing for campaigns to reach "precision and scale" in just a few clicks.

The three main avenues to reach online consumers are through search engines, social media or display ads. Levick believes search engines are used by people who know exactly what they are already looking for, and social media is used to connect smaller groups of like-minded individuals.

Display ads target a broader group of people who might not otherwise come across a campaign's message on the internet.
